Meet the Musicians

John Redding is a San Francisco Bay Area refugee who moved to the beautiful Mendocino Coast in 2004. He began performing in local pubs and restaurants, honing his skills, and experiencing what would later become the basis for his original songs. Highway 128 is his debut CD and a second one is already being recorded.

John has this to say about those musicians and vocalists who helped me with this project.

Calvin Turnbull is a master of music production with decades of experience dealing with many well-know and top-flight musicians. I still wonder why he was interested in working with me! But he turned my humble tunes into real, honest-to-goodness songs that are full of sound and interesting embellishments. He is also a talented musician who played several instruments for this CD. Calvin is the real genius here.

Sally Wells is an accomplished vocalist who came back home to Mendocino after spending a decade in New York City as a recording professional. Her voice and harmonies have a way of making my songs more poignant and personal, as she does for I Am Not an Apostle and Before I Met You. Sally is a singer-songwriter of her own with a new CD in the works.

Nat Montoya is a self-taught blues harpist of unusual talent. On this CD, Nat plays an exuberant country style harp on My Pickup Died. His true love is blues harmonica which he plays with several outstanding bands in the Mendocino area.

Roy Helsing is known around the country for his accordion music. We had fun recording the sea chant Song of the Ocean by experimenting with the accordion to reproduce just about any sound we wanted. Eventually, Roy was able to coax his accordion to play a very lovely and lyrical melody that sounds like both a violin and tin whistle. Totally made the song. He also added lovely accordion fills to Highway 128.
